Ross Norman has won the inaugural Legends Title at the British Open in Manchester. |
New Zealand squash legend Ross Norman has added another chapter to his long and illustrious career. Twenty three years after famously ending the unbeaten run of the near invincible Jahangir Khan in the final of the World Open , Norman has been given the chance to strut his stuff again on finals day at the British Open in Manchester. The 50-year-old kiwi and Britain's former world number four Gawain Briars were invited to contest the inaugural Squash Legends title, a new initiative launched by the tournament promoters. Both jumped at the chance to rekindle their 1980s rivalry on the all glass show court in Manchester. In their prime, Norman and Briars recorded four wins each against each other in world tour events, so the match offered an opportunity to break the deadlock and give bragging rights to the victor. That honour has gone to Norman, who fought back from a game down to win 8-11, 11-6, 11-4. It capped off a great tournament for Norman, who was also crowned British Open champion in the 50-54 age group of the Masters event. The former world number two swept through the draw with ease, conceding a total of just 17 points in five matches.
