The club is one of the founding clubs in New Zealand, and the first for the Wellington District. They have a fantastic committee who are really driving enthusiasm for squash within the community. Here is a selection of initiatives and events that the club has done this year:

In March the club hosted an event named “Masterton Battle of the Trades”. Club Captain, Marg Patete said the following about the event; “good fun, gained some new members, yay! Club farmers, new players and blokes not wanting to be too competitive enjoy this format for another mid-week game”.

Also in March the club held an event called “Masterton Tour de Gladstone” which could no doubt rival the Tour de France!! Comments from this event included that “it was great fun and a beautiful day for a cycle ride. There were no flatties and a good crew of 18 took part”.

The highlight from April was a tournament named “Mad Hatters I” where out of towners can play x1 Friday and x2 saturday and go in the draw to WIN $1000! Members said that it was an excellent fun tourney and a well supported event.

The club hosted six rounds of women's interclub which was well supported with some excellent games and all up they had 46 competing throughout the year which is fantastic. There were also new members that were recruited from the competition! After the success of this years competition the club will be initiating a men's competition for 2010.

Club Champs were held in September with record numbers playing with 64 in the seniors. A good contingent of about 30 juniors played alongside and with the senior draw. Marg Patete stated “the clubrooms were active most nights and matches were well supported by family and friends calling in to the club. Superb "spit roast" on Saturday night of hogget and pork with pot luck from members, a great way to feed a crowd. A few wooden spoon mementos were given out at prizegiving and some welcomed bouquets were a thoughtful addition too”.

This weekend (5th – 7th November) the club is holding their 51st anniversary at the Masterton Trust House Squash Centre. On Saturday night there is a dinner and dance with guest speakers Sir Brian Lochore (who is a past member of the club) and Joseph Romanos. Patete says that “the club has enjoyed 35 new senior members this season plus a few juniors but the nuts and bolts of the club comes from a healthy base of around 60 senior members who have played for quite a few years now”.

Coming up in December the club is having the “Masterton Tour de Gladstone II” with Patete saying that training has begun for some doing Taupo it should be a good relaxing ride to the pub for lunch. The club has planned initiatives for next year such as a hangi pit and to develop a website. This is a club that is going forward and embracing all that squash has to offer!
