King, who made the main draw through qualifying, gave Irish fifth seed Madeline Perry a run for her money in the opening round, taking the first game 11-6. However, the world number nine won the crucial points when things were tight in the next two games, before going on to win 6-11, 11-9, 14-12, 11-6.
Hawkes went one better, making it through to the second round. The 11th seeded kiwi had a confidence boosting 11-8, 11-5, 11-4 win over England's Suzie Pierrepont in the first round. However, the world number 18 had the unenviable task of facing top seed Nicol David in the second round. Hawkes pushed the world number one close in the first and third games, but was eventually beaten 11-9, 11-6, 12-10.
