15/01/2010 - Peter Nicol, former World Number 1 squash player reflects on what it is like to play and win the Tournament of Champions which is played in New York's Grand Central Station. This years tournament goes from January 22 - 28 and features New Zealand's Campbell Grayson and Kashif Shuja. |
Peter Nicol writes:
It takes a special bit of skill to win in New York, so much so that for the first five years of the event I really didn't enjoy playing there.
It was simply too busy, too noisy, and there were too many people. As a result, I found it hard to be in New York where you need to adapt to the environment.
It wasn't until I got a bit older and began to mature that I managed to enjoy the experience and play well whereas in previous years the energy of the city was too overwhelming.
