05/02/2010 - Wayne Seebeck is the new Director of Master's Squash, taking over from Judy Cooper, who stepped down from Masters Director at the end of last year. He has provided a short biography on himself below. |
At the behest of others I am posting this brief life story as a means of introduction at the beginning of my tenure as Director of N.Z. Masters Squash.
I have large shoes to fill taking over from retiring director, Judy Cooper however I have been known to wear womens footwear during the occasional theme function so feel capable of giving it a whirl, especially as Judy's work in the past has left me with a sound base from which to operate.
I am an Architectural Designer with my own practice, and have worked from my home office building for the past 34 years with my partner of 29 years Freda Walker and her daughter Shelly being my able assistants.
Between Freddie and myself we have 5 children and 8 grandchildren, many of whom spend large wads of time at our abode which provides a generous chunk of lifes pleasures.
I began playing squash at 26 and the game took a death grip on my psyche at an early stage, resulting in many happy/sad/traumatic/exhausting/exhilarating phases.
I have been a member of the Christchurch Squash Club for 32 years, and have played in their open grade team since 1980, which has resulted in the doubtful honour of owning the oldest age in this esteemed competition. I have been selected in various masters' representative teams and served a little at administration level, and the people I have met and firm friends I have made during this time have certainly helped shape my life.
I am an ardent supporter of the HI-H09 scoring system and believe the move to par scoring is a serious threat to the game at all levels below elite, however this is probably not the forum to air my disappointment in the current state of affairs.
I enjoy 60s-70s music, reading, watching quality sport live and on t.v, socialising, travelling, and my usual sports of squash, tennis, golf, and mountain biking.
Although I am a reluctant and poorly equipped computer operator I realise that in this modern world it is the ideal form of communication, therefore I propose to post a regular, newsletter format, update on the Masters section of the N.Z. website with the assistance of you, the squash fraternity, whom I trust will forward me all manner of interesting and relevant information.
It is a great honour to be appointed to this position and I look forward to the various challenges in the years ahead, which I am sure will be met and overcome with the help of my fellow selectors and the small team of District Representatives operating as a squash ‘think tank', with the aim of growing the game at masters level and bringing back some of the previously absent districts to the National teams event.
To this end I urge districts to liase and possibly combine resources to field teams, with the added option of co-opting secondary tier players from larger districts, which has been successfully done in the past.
I hope to travel to some masters events over the coming year (subject to the Crusaders & Canterbury home games dates) and I look forward to having the opportunity to catch up with many of you during this time.
