25/03/2010 - Ahead of the International Doubles Tournament that will take place from 29th-31st March at the National Squash Centre in Manchester, England, Nick Matthew and Alison Waters discuss their training, their game plan and the challenges of playing doubles. |
The Doubles tournament will see teams from England, Scotland, Wales, Australia, Malaysia & India will be lining up to fight for their places in their respective countries Commonwealth Games squad's ahead of October's Games.
Waters and Matthew were interviewed about mixed doubles;
Question: Playing in a doubles team is obviously very different to playing solo – what are the challenges that you face and on the flip side, what do you enjoy about it?
AW: A really good understanding of your doubles partner and their skills is the key to a successful partnership. There are different pressures when playing doubles in comparison to singles, as most importantly you don't want to let your partner down and have to stay very focused throughout the whole match. As a result, doubles can be very mentally challenging.
NM: My doubles experiences so far have been very challenging as I have found it hard to adapt from the rhythm of singles and the fact that I see the ball a lot less when playing alongside a partner. On the flip side, I have enjoyed training and think that we are on the right track to do well in both the International Doubles and the Commonwealth Games in October.
