Juniors out to impress selectors in Auckland this weekend

08/04/2010 - There is a lot on the line for some of New Zealand's top young squash players in Auckland this weekend.
The cream of the junior crop will be going head to head at the North Shore Squash Club, as they bid to be crowned champion at the New Zealand Junior Open.

However, for the junior boys, there is even more to play for. They also have a chance to stake a claim for a spot in the New Zealand team for the Junior Men's World Championships late this year.

Cantabrian Paul Coll is seeded to take out the title, but is likely to face some serious challenges along the way. Second seeded Aucklander Lance Beddoes is certain to have his eye on the title, while third seed Bryce Redman (Eastern) and 4th seed Michael Sunderland (Southland) could also be in the mix.

Meanwhile, Auckland's Lana Harrison is favoured to take out the junior girls title. Harrison will be determined to make amends for 2009 when she sat out the tournament due to injury. Standing in her way is second seeded Cantabrian Megan Craig as well as 2009 champion Emma Millar and beaten finalist Amanda Landers-Murphy.

The tournament gets underway on Friday.

The full draw is available on the Squash NZ homepage under "upcoming events".
