Big entries for Auckland Open & Graded Champs

19/05/2010 - Remuera Rackets will be bursting at the seams with the hosting of the Auckland Open & Graded Champs this week.

No fewer than 185 players have entered the event, spread across 12 divisions, including a 19 strong men's open draw and 12 players in the women's open.
Campbell Grayson is favoured to win the men's event, following on from his victory at the Waikato Open in Hamilton earlier this month. However, the world number 39 is likely to face a stiff challenge from second seed Martin Knight, ranked just three places lower on the world list. The men's draw also features a majority of the players vying for a place in the New Zealand team for the Junior Men's World Championships in Ecuador later this year, including fourth seed Lance Beddoes who finished runner-up in last month's New Zealand Junior Open. Others trying to improve their chances of a spot on the plane with good performances this week are Bryce Redman, Michael Sunderland, Tom Nash, Tate Matson and Josh McHugh.

Meanwhile, Joelle King is the stand out favourite to take out the women's title, after making light work of her opposition at the Waikato Open in Hamilton. King has been in stunning form over the past 12 months, rising to number 21 in the world as a result. Young Aucklander Lana Harrison is seeded to meet King in the final, but is likely to face a stiff challenge from third seed Kylie Lindsay in the semis.

The Remuera Open is due to get underway this evening due to the vast number of entries, but the main protagonists in the men's open receive a bye first up with their opening matches in the second round tomorrow while the women's title contenders get underway on Saturday.
