A dodgy knee forced Anthony Ricketts to retire from the international squash circuit two years ago, but it appears he can still get around the court okay.
The former world number three, who now spends his time mentoring New Zealand's top squash talent as the country's high performance coach, has taken out the men's open title at the Herne Bay Open in Auckland. Ricketts dug deep into his legendary fitness reserves to beat top seed Campbell Grayson in a gruelling five game thriller in the final.
The 31-year-old won the opening game 11-5, but was soon on the back foot as Grayson claimed the next two to be just one game away from victory. However, Ricketts fought back again to claim the last two games in an enthralling 11-5, 10-12, 4-11, 12-10, 12-10 victory.
There was no such drama in the women's open, with top seed Joelle King continuing to dominate the domestic scene. The world number 21 claimed her third title in the space of a month with an 11-6, 11-9, 11-8 victory over second seed Tamsyn Leevey in the final.
