01/06/2010 - Joelle King's seemingly insatiable appetite for squash titles continues this weekend. |
|
The world number 21 is top seed in the Pelorus Trust Wellington Open, which has been split between the Mana and Tawa Squash Clubs this week due to the huge number of entries. King has already won the Waikato Open, the Remuera/Auckland Open and the Herne Bay Open in the last few weeks, without dropping a single game in the process. Once again, former world number 24 Tamsyn Leevey is expected to be the biggest obstacle, having returned to the court in a bid to make the New Zealand team for the Commonwealth Games and the Women's World Team Championships in Palmerston North later this year. Leevey made the final at both the Waikato Open and the Herne Bay Open, but was unable to halt King's relentless march on either occasion. Meanwhile, local favourite Martin Knight is the hot favourite to take out the title in a 16-strong men's draw made up entirely of A-Grade players. Knight has been in good form this year and should be too strong for the field in the absence of fellow touring pro Campbell Grayson and Herne Bay Open winner Anthony Ricketts. His main opposition is expected to be fellow Wellingtonian Evan Williams, while Central's Josh Greenfield and rising junior star Paul Coll from Canterbury are also in the mix. The Pelorus Trust Wellington Open starts tomorrow, although both the men's and women's open contenders don't get their campaigns underway until Friday. Seeds Women 1. Joelle King (Waikato) 2.
