Timely win for Redman

Bryce Redman's done his chances of making the New Zealand junior men's team no harm with a win in the first round in Wellington
Eastern's Bryce Redman has supplied the only upset in the opening round of the Pelorus Trust Wellington Open.

Ninth seeded Redman has beaten eight seed Josh King 3-2, in a 95 minute thriller at the Mana Squash Club. It is a timely victory for the Napier teen, with the New Zealand team named in less than two weeks for the Junior Men's World Champs in Ecuador later this year.

The remainder of the men's first round matches went to plan as far as the seeds are concerned, including a comfortable 3-0 win for title favourite Martin Knight, who downed Cody Herman in just 15 minutes.

The two first round matches played in the women's draw were also bereft of surprises, with top seed Joelle King remaining on course for her fourth title in five weeks with a 3-0 victory over Rebecca Barnett while fourth seed Megan Craig edged fifth seeded Emma Millar 3-2.
