18/06/2010 - The seeded players have largely been untroubled on day one of the South Island Champs in Christchurch |
Not too many problems for the title favourites in the opening round of the South Island Squash Championships in Christchurch today. World number 42 Martin Knight has led a procession of seeded players into the second round of the men's draw, winning his opening match 3-0 against Tim McVie. It caps off a good day for Knight, who is one of six players named in the New Zealand team for the Commonwealth Games in Delhi later this year. The team was ratified by the New Zealand Olympic Committee this morning. Joining him in the second round is second seed Scott Gardiner, who had the benefit of a first up bye, while third seed Paul Coll and fourth seeded Grant Craig both won 3-0. It was a similar story in the women's draw, with the top four seeds all through unscathed. Megan Craig and Jutta Tuunanen had byes, while third seed Karen Walton and fourth seed Shayle Higginson both won in straight games. The second round gets underway at 10:45 tomorrow morning.
