Southland's Michael Sunderland has upstaged a couple of his New Zealand team-mates to take out the under 19 boys title at the South Island Age Group Squash Championships in Christchurch.
Sunderland powered past Auckland's Lance Beddoes in straight games in the semifinals, before a hard fought five game win over Cantabrian Paul Coll in the title decider. All three will represent New Zealand at the Junior Men's World Championships in Ecuador later this month, along with Eastern's Bryce Redman who sat out the tournament due to illness
Meanwhile, Canterbury's Megan Craig added another title to her fast-growing tally with victory in the girl's under 19 draw. The top seed was too sharp for Otago's Cara Raal in the final, 11-5, 11-7, 11-4.
The juniors will now head to Napier for the North Island Age Group Championships at the Hawke's Bay Squash Club this weekend. The four New Zealand team members are seeded to meet in the semifinals of the boy's event, while Megan Craig is again top seed in the girl's, ahead of Wellington's Emma Millar and Central's Danielle Fourie with Cara Raal seeded fourth.
