The annual battle is set to begin for the right to be called the top squash club in New Zealand. |
There should be plenty of fireworks on the Hawke's Bay Squash Club courts this weekend as the annual battle for national squash club supremacy gets underway. Provincial pride goes on the line the country's top men try to lead their teams to Cousins Shield glory, while the women chase victory in the Mitchell Cup. Remuera is seeded to take out the Cousins Shield with a powerful line-up that includes former world number 36 Kashif Shuja, rising star Alex Grayson and touring professional Graeme Wilson. However, Herne Bay may fancy their chances of an upset after beating Remuera in the Auckland league final earlier this week. Also standing in the way are 2009 champions Palmerston North, who are unlikely to give up their title lightly and feature a seven strong line-up of A grade players led by seasoned veterans Josh Greenfield and Mike McSherry. Meanwhile, the Mitchell Cup looks to be wide open with a number of teams stacked with A Grade players. Strength in depth has earned North Shore the top seeding, but the Tamsyn Leevey led Mitchell Park could prove a handful as could third seeded Cambridge led by rising star Amanda Cranston. Remuera will also rely on depth as they try to retain the title they won in 2009. The Cousins Shield and Mitchell Cup start on Friday.
