After a last minute redraw due to a couple of late withdrawals, Lance Beddoes, who is seeded in the top 32, was handed a first round bye, while team-mates Paul Coll and Michael Sunderland both had straight games wins. Coll opened his account with an 11-3 11-2 11-1 thrashing of Ecuador's Sebastien Larrea and will face third seeded Frenchman Lucas Serme in the second round. Sunderland was also a convincing winner, beating Venezuela's Daniel Prato 11-3, 11-2, 11-5, and will play top 16 seeded Pakistani Farhan Zaman for a place in the third round.

Bryce Redman was the only New Zealander to miss out on a spot in the second round. Redman went down 12-10, 11-6, 11-4 to Canadian Arjun Gupta.
