New Zealand continues to defy the seedings at the World Junior Men's Squash Championships in Ecuador.
The 11th seeded kiwis are through to the fifth place playoff, after a 2-1 upset victory over 9th seeded Germany.
New Zealand number one Paul Coll was first on court once again, taking on Rudi Rohlmuller who was seeded fourth in the individual event. Coll dropped the first two games and appeared to be headed for a straight games defeat, but mounted a stunning fight back, winning the next two games 11-1, 11-2. However, he could not sustain it in the deciding fifth game and went down 3-2.
Michael Sunderland was handed the job of keeping New Zealand in the tie, and made a great start against Simon Vaclahovsky racing out to a 2-0 lead. However, the high altitude started taking its toll on the kiwi, and Vaclahovsky claimed a tight third game and went 10-8 up in the fourth. But Sunderland dug deep and clawed back the deficit to win the game 12-10 and the match 3-1.
That left Lance Beddoes and Sven Lemmerman to battle it out to decide the tie. Beddoes started well, taking the first game comfortably, but dropped the second after taking his foot off the pedal - prompting a chat from coach Anthony Ricketts between games. The 17-year-old kiwi lifted his intensity again as a result and went on to win 3-1.
New Zealand will now face fourth seeded India in the fifth place playoff tomorrow.
