Hawkes stars for NZ in Melbourne

17/08/2010 - Jaclyn Hawkes has won two from two on day one of the Invitational Doubles in Melbourne
A perfect day for New Zealand's Jaclyn Hawkes at the Australian Invitational Doubles Challenge in Melbourne.

Hawkes has picked up two wins from two matches, in two separate events.

The world number 14 teamed up with fellow Kiwi Kylie Lindsay in the women's doubles, and promptly upset the third seeded English pairing of Laura Lengthorn-Massaro and Tania Bailey 11-10, 9-11, 11-9. They will face second seeded Australians Kasey Brown and Donna Urquhart in the semifinals tomorrow.

Hawkes then joined forces with Campbell Grayson in the mixed doubles, where the Kiwi pair accounted for fourth seeded Aussies David Palmer and Donna Urquhart 11-10, 11-10. Their next assignment is English top seeds James Willstrop and Jenny Duncalf tomorrow.

There were also some other encouraging results from the New Zealand team.

Joelle King and Martin Knight lost their opening match in the mixed doubles, but gave third seeded Aussies Cameron Pilley and Kasey Brown a tough workout as they went down 9-11, 11-5, 11-6. Knight also fared reasonably well with Campbell Grayson in the men's doubles, losing 11-8, 11-7 to Englishmen Peter Barker and Daryl Selby, who are both ranked in the world's top 10.

Joelle King also bowed out in the first round of the women's doubles with Tamsyn Leevey, beaten 5-11, 11-5, 11-7 by Australians Lisa Camilleri and Amelia Pittock.
