Tough day for NZ in Melbourne

18/08/2010 - The New Zealand team has bowed out of all title contention at the Invitational Doubles event in Melbourne
A disappointing day for New Zealand at the Australian Invitational Doubles squash tournament in Melbourne.

Jaclyn Hawkes and have bowed out of title contention in the women's doubles, going down in three games to second seeded Aussies Kasey Brown and Donna Urquhart. The kiwi pair won the opening game 11-4, but it was all down hill from there as they lost 4-11, 11-5, 11-8.

It was a similar story for Hawkes and playing partner Campbell Grayson in the mixed doubles. The unfancied New Zealanders went down in three games to the powerful English pairing of Jenny Duncalf and James Wilstrop, beaten 11-7, 10-11, 11-7.

There were some other encouraging results for the New Zealand team in the plate section.

Grayson and Martin Knight fought back from a game down to beat Scotland's Chris Small and Lyall Paterson 8-11, 11-5, 11-4 in the men's doubles while Joelle King and Tamsyn Leevey hammered Australians Melody Francis and Sarah Caldwell 11-1, 11-3 in the women's draw.

However, Knight and King were 11-8, 5-11 11-8 in the mixed event by England's Adrian Grant and Alison Waters.
