New Zealand junior Keegan Burkhart has fallen just shy of a big upset on day one of the North Island Championships |
Day one has gone to the form book at the ASB Bank North Island Championships in Hamilton.
Only three of the seeded players were in action in the opening round of the PSA men's draw, with all three safely through to the second round. However, fifth seeded Australian Josh Cardwell only narrowly avoided a repeat of last week's first round exit at the South Island Open. Cardwell twice had to fight back from a game down to beat New Zealand junior team member Keegan Burkhart 5/11 11/9 8/11 11/6 11/8.
Sixth seed Evan Williams also had to dig deep to beat fellow kiwi junior Lui Syder in four, but eighth seeded Canadian Dane Sharp had few troubles in disposing of Australian Courtney West in straight games.
In the WISPA women's draw, Trina Moore and Lisa Cowlard both had straight games wins in the only two matches of the opening round, but both then met their match in the quarterfinals.
Moore won only two points as she was bulldozed by top seed Joelle King while Cowlard went down in four to second seed Amanda Cranston.
The other two quarterfinals also went to form, with third seed Jackie Laurenson and fourth seed Lana Harrison both cruising to straight games victories.
