01/08/2008 - New Zealand's Campbell Grayson has caused the biggest upset in the opening round of the Clare Valley Australian Open Squash Championships in Clare, South Australia. |
|
The kiwi qualifier has knocked sixth seeded Australian Ryan Cuskelly out of the tournament, with a hotly contested 11/6 11/9 13/11 victory in 56 minutes. Grayson was more consistent than his higher ranked opponent and kept his composure in the second and third games as Cuskelly began to argue with the officials. "I think it helped me because I was able to concentrate on what I was doing, and I realised he was getting rattled," Grayson said. He will face English second seed Chris Ryder in the quarterfinals. New Zealand number one Kashif Shuja is also through to the last eight. The third seeded kiwi has edged past Australian Mike Corren in a high quality match, winning 11/7 3/11 11/8 14/12. "The glass court rewards squash rather than just fitness, which is why it was such a good match" he said. "I was glad to get through actually - it shows you that in the first round the matches are going to be tight." It shows you the depth of competition this year." Shuja's next assignment is fifth seeded Aussie Scott Arnold in the last eight. However, Martin Knight's tournament has come to an end. The kiwi qualifier put up a good fight against the top seed, Australian world number five David Palmer, but ultimately succumbed 11/9 11/5 11/7. In the women's draw, second seeded kiwi Jaclyn Hawkes has romped into the quarterfinals with a 11/5 11/0 11/4 demolition of Australian qualifier Zoe Petrovansky. Despite starting the match with a fault - for the first time in her career - Hawkes always looked in control against the 18-year-old from Brisbane. "She played pretty well in the first game," Hawkes said. "But then I think I started to get a better length than her and she started to make a few mistakes. "I don't know how many times she's played on the glass court before (it was Petrovansky's first time) but it's quite a different experience. "The first time you play on it it's quite hard." The world number 19 will face Australian Lisa Camilleri in the last eight. Sixth seed Joelle King's also advanced, thrashing England's Jenna Gates 11/3 11/7 11/2. King will take on fourth seed Christina Mak from Hong Kong for a place in the semifinals. Kylie Lindsay's been unable to emulate her fellow kiwis, making an early exit with an 11/3 11/3 11/2 loss to seventh seeded Annie Au from Hong Kong. Results...
