The 2008 Beijing Olympics will be remembered for many things, most notably Michael Phelps' run to a record eight swimming gold medals. |
But the Beijing Games also will be remembered as the swan song for a pair of Olympic sports -- baseball and softball.
Although baseball and softball are popular in parts of the world, the International Olympic Committee decided to discontinue these sports for the 2012 London Olympics. Both could return in four years for the 2016 Games.
With baseball and softball out of the mix, which sports will be added for the 2012 Games? Nothing has been decided, but possible replacements include squash, cricket, golf, karate and rugby.
