A major confidence boost for New Zealand's Kashif Shuja ahead of the World Squash Open in Manchester later this month. Shuja won through to the quarterfinals at the PSA World Tour's Wolverhampton Open, after a suprise victory over English fifth seed Joey Barrington. The kiwi number one took the first game 11/6 but dropped the second 11/3. Kahif then bounced back to win the third 11/9 before Barrington was forced to retire injured.
However the kiwi number one fell just short of making the semifinals, beaten in five games by Pakistan's Aamir Atlas Khan, going down 8-11 11-6 9-11 11-2 11-6 in 53 minutes.
Meanwhile, fellow kiwi Martin Knight has also produced some good form at the tournament, battling his way through the qualifying rounds to claim a spot in the main draw. However, Knight was unable to progress to the second round, going down 11/2 11/6 11/5 to English sixth seed Jon Kemp.
Kashif and Martin's next event is the World Open in Manchester, where they will be joined by fellow kiwis Shelley Kitchen, Jaclyn Hawkes, Louise Crome and Campbell Grayson. The World Open gets underway on October 11.
