2017 Annual Awards - Performance Coach of the Year Part 1

Now we start to take a look at the Performance Coach of the Year in preparation for the 2017 Annual Awards that will take place on 25th November, 6.30pm at JetPark in Auckland.

The nominations for the Performance Coach of the Year are

  • Aaron Bunguard
  • Glen Wilson
  • Joanne Williams
  • Nick Mita

To be eligible for the Performance Coach of the Year the coach must be working with athletes at a District Representative Level or above, and / or working with a District Performance Squad.

When deciding a judging panel considers the following:

  • Coach development - number of modules attended and other learning opportunities taken
  • Coach activity - number of hours coached and types of programmes / services offered
  • Athlete outcomes - evidence of improving players / teams performances to achieve results
  • Coach's impact - influence that the coach has had on participation / membership

The first finalists is Aaron Bungard. Aaron is a member of the Oamaru Squash & Badminton Club and also coaches out of the Waimate and Timaru Squash Clubs.

Aaron has been an integral squash player in Squash Midlands and has now accepted the role of High Performance coach for Squash Midlands. He was an early facilitator of the modules but has said he prefers to coach. Aaron has coached the Midlands junior squads for 2 ½ - 3 hours once a week for 28 weeks and 6 hours on 10 weekends over the year.

On court Success includes: -

  • Squash Midlands National Junior Team playing at Nationals 9th (haven’t been a team for 5yrs)
  • Keidah Bungard & Lily Rae chosen for SquashNZ development squads
  • Keidah Bungard reserve Oceania & Trans Tasman Team Series
  • Keidah Bungard U19 ranking 15th B2 > A2
  • Lily Ray U17 ranking 14th
  • Liam Direen E2 > D1
  • Tannah Rintoul E1 > C2
  • Ashlyn Fenwick E2 > D1

Our second finalist is Nick Mita. Nick has been working in the Squash Central and Squash Wellington regions this year primarily based at the Tawa, Mana, Mitchell Park, Upper Hutt, Khandallah, Fraser Park and SquashGym clubs.

Nick has been instrumental in coaching an incredibly large pool of players in 2017, ranging from Juniors at clubs in the Wellington area, through to National individual and team events both in NZ and Australia, and has also been selected as the Assistant World Men's Team Coach to attend the event in France in November 2017. Nick also has coaching links to Evan Williams who has represented NZ at an International level. All the individuals involved with Nick's coaching have had some major gains in both grading and competition wins.

Nick's nomination stated "He is a huge asset to NZ squash coaching. Nick has no qualms coaching players who are at lower grades as well as thoughs at the A grade level. He is a full time coach that helps club membership by the players he coaches having fantastic results."

Congratulations Aaron and Nick on being a finalist in the Performance Coach of the Year Award.
