Ways to Play Women's Squash logo - web

Squash is a great game for Females for many reasons, but particularly the four Fs: Fitness, Friends, Family and of course Fun.

Women's Squash is an easy way for females of all ages and abilities to be introduced to the game of squash in a fun, social group programme with their peers. The aim is to provide an active and fun introduction to playing squash in groups, whilst at the same time offering sufficient learning and practice time in each session to allow players to achieve success and receive the many benefits playing squash offers.

Ways to Play - Women's Squash

Guided by a trained coach (Module 8), Women's Squash participants are taught how to serve, rally and play from their very first session and form new connections with others to give them a group of people at the same level with whom to play.

Women's Squash uses the SquashStart Coaching Resources and stage-appropriate equipment.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I find a club that offers Women's Squash?
To find a club that offers Women's Squash programmes click here.

What do I need to bring for Women's Squash?
All you need is comfortable workout clothes, supportive shoes, a drink bottle and a sweat towel.

How often should I play squash?
For the best results we suggest you get on court at least twice a week. Take a look at our videos to help you learn the basics, or chat to a fellow club member for some tips.

How experienced do I need to be?
The great news is that Women's Squash can be for people who have never played before, those who have received some basic coaching or participants returning after a long absence. It only takes a few sessions before you will start to feel comfortable on the court so don’t give up!

Can I play squash if I am pregnant?
We recommend you seek advice from your obstetric care giver when playing squash. You should explain the nature of activity you would like to do and keep them updated with how you feel during exercise. Please STOP what you are doing if you ever feel dizzy or uncomfortable. Your range of motion is eventually going to change, making it uncomfortable to twist and jump. Pregnancy is generally the time for maintenance, not for striving for new fitness goals or competing at high intensities.

General rules:

  • Avoid playing playing in high heat environments - wear loose, comfortable clothing with layers that can be removed.
  • Do not spend long periods standing still as this can cause changes in blood pressure
  • Restrict activities that can cause loss of balance so you don't fall.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Reduce the level of intensity when you and your doctor think you should.
  • Take it easy and respect what your body is telling you.

What if I can’t do the moves?
The technique for squash is super simple so even the most inexperienced player will pick it up in no time. Your coach is there to work with you and provide you with challenges that meet your needs. You’ll find your skills and fitness will improve over a number of sessions.
